How to Coupon and Save BIG$$
Let me ask you this: If you knew that you would easily save more than half your grocery dollars would you make an effort? I save, on average between 66-78% a month. Last month I spent $562 on groceries for a family of 5 making last months savings approx.$1,150-1,400! Would you like to know what we eat? Mostly lean cuts of meat...93/7 ground beef, ground turkey, pork chops, pork tenderloin, steak..over 2 pounds of FRESH fruits and veggies a DAY. Lots of juice (average 4 quarts a day between me and my husband)! We love snacking on yogurt, cheese, granola....you get the picture. The point is we don't live on beans and rice. I get asked all the time, how do I do it and where do you start.
Here are some things to keep in mind:
- Sales/Coupons are seasonal. i.e: You can get great deals on picnic items in the summer, sweets after holidays, baking goods just before the holiday season...
- Most stores double and even triple your coupons. Usually the coupon is not to exceed .50 cents, but the point is NO COUPON IS TOO SMALL. Don't think a .40 cent coupon is a waste, it is actually worth .80 or $1.20!
- You can use more than 1 coupon on an item, referred to as "stacking".
- You can not use multiple copies of the exact same coupon, but you can use a retail, manufacturers and a "peelie"....
- A "peelie" is a coupon that is attached to merchandise in the store designed to be used at that time.
- A "catalina" is a coupon that prints out with your receipt. Usually it is for products that you have either just purchased or for items that are being currently promoted.
- You can load electronic coupons onto your store card.
- You do not have to get the newspaper to clip coupons (I don't). INTERNET INTERNET INTERNET
- You do not have to buy the things you do not want or need to save money.
- Devote an area to keep your coupons-a drawer, spot on top of your printer, folder, coupon organizer....whatever works for YOU.
- When you see a coupon you might possibly use-PRINT IT. (Several are posted daily on www.3carseats.com)
- If you get the newspaper, clip your coupons. If you do not get it delivered BUY it, you will get your money back tenfold!
- Organize your coupons by the order of your local stores asles or by general categories (frozen, canned goods...)
- If you do not have a grocery store savings card- sign up! (Tom Thumb Reward card, Kroger Plus card..)
- Visit Cellfire and add coupons to your card electronically!
- It is very common for Cellfire to have the same coupon as Coupons.com or Red Plum at the same time!!! (You save twice!)
- UPromise
has electronic coupons that change monthy. The savings go into a savings account of sorts

- Cool Savings has great coupons, but you will have to spend a few minutes going through their offers once you sign up. (Click skip)
- You can buy coupons for very cheap at Coupon Hunter !!! The savings far outway the penny you may spend!
- It is common for your newpaper to have the same coupons as (see above) at the same time!!! (You can save thrice!)
- If is common for newspaper coupons to have the coupon 1-2 weeks prior to being found on the internet so SAVE it to STACK it!
- Make a list of items that you need.
- Always grab the sales circular at the store and glance over it briefly prior to shopping if you do not get one at home.
It really is very easy and soooo worth your time. Don't tell yourself that you do not have time, do you have time to watch tv? (The word multitasking comes to mind
) I spend maybe 30 minutes a week getting my coupons together before each shopping trip and I know first hand that the time spent is well worth it. Honestly, I do not have time every single day to devote to coupons, but when I see one I print/clip it and add it to "the pile". Prior to each trip I cut them (if neccessary) and lay them on my kitchen table to play "the matching game". If I have more than one coupon for a product I have a match and I stack them
Once all my "cards" are laid out on the table I put them in order based of my normal route in my local grocery store. Produce, bread, condiments, jams, jellys, canned veggies, pasta, boxed dinners, soup..ect. As I am going through the aisles I check my corresponding coupons. If the item is on sale and I have a coupon(s) I get it and place the coupon in a new stack, if not I put it in the back of the "deck" to be used in the future. If there is an item that I need I buy it, if it can wait I wait. Simple. This is my normal ritual and it works for me. Sure, sometimes I get a glare from the people behind me in line or a rude sigh from the cashier when they see my stack of coupons, but they don't pay my bills. Most of the time, the cashier and/or the people in line are impressed when they see the substantial savings!
Be sure to check back with me often for all the current deals and before every visit to the grocery store. I always post when new coupons are available at the coupon sites, but you can always find them on my sidebar. Look to the left on my homepage ![]()
